Although Quebec City is ranked among the top destinations in the world by several travel magazines, it remains somewhat a hidden gem. However, many famous peolple visited and were left, like many modern tourists, struck by its beauty. Charles Dickens visited in the early 1800’s and commented: The impression made upon the visitor by this Gibraltar of America: its giddy heights; its citadel suspended as it were in the air; its picturesque steep streets and frowning gateways; and the splendid views which burst upon the eye at every turn: is at once unique and lasting. « Gibraltar of North America » indeed, thanks to its cliff-top situation overlooking the mighty Saint Lawrence River – still today, a main trading seaway into the North American interior.
